OK, it has come to my attention that some of your pictures are not displaying properly but come up as a box with a cross in it. Why is this? Well, there are a few possibilities: - The webhost that you are using (villagephotos,Angelfire, etc) has a problem with "Bandwidth" - we'll get to that later
- The webhost has their server offline
- The name of your image has been changed!
Now, according to Matisse's glossary of internet terms, bandwith is - How much stuff you can send through a connection. Usually measured in bits-per-second. A full page of English text is about 16,000 bits. A fast modem can move about 57,000 bits in one second. Full-motion full-screen video would require roughly 10,000,000 bits-per-second, depending on compression. Doesn't really answer it, but some Internet Service Providers do limit the amount of access you get to your website/pictures etc. So, if you have the problem, try changing your webhost, just to spread the load as it were. You may notice, if you look around this site and check the properties of my pictures, I use at least two myself. members.aol.com/tony4inone/Smilies/2jump.gif [/img]

OK, this does appear elsewhere in these boards, but it is fairly important, so I may just get away with it!
Checking for Copyright! There are a lot of graphics available on the internet, but it is hard to tell exactly what is copyrighted and what is not. Since Proboards prohibits the use of copyrighted material, it is possible that posting a copyrighted picture may get this site closed.
There is one fail-safe way to check if a picture is copyrighted.
a. Open Notepad (you can find it at start, then programs, then accessories, then notepad). b. Place the graphic on your desktop. c. Close all windows except for notepad. d. Click on the picture and while holding the mouse button down drag it onto notepad. e. You should now see a lot of code in the notepad window. Scroll down looking for copyright notices, normally like - ©F Bloggs 2003
Sometimes, you can drag a copy of the picture directly from a web-site into Notepad.
If you want to test this out try it with this graphic.
You will notice that if you right click on the picture and select properties that there is no creator information. But in the coding of the graphic there is "©Tony4in1©"

Note to other Mods/Admins: I'm double posting this! |
Angelfire have just responded to my query as to why they shut my /folk/wcnmutineers account. Here's an abridged copy of reply: "Your account was removed because it does not contain enough HTML files in relation to other files, such as .jpg's or .gif's. Our automated abuse tools are programmed to remove such sites. Please keep in mind that Angelfire is meant for users to create their own, personalized comprehensive Web sites, not simply for file storage." So for goodness sake, put some Html files in if you are going to use Angelfire! And this is more than their tiny Index File! I may well be considering a simple way of helping some of you out if this becomes a problem!

HTML -- (HyperText Markup Language) The coding language used to create Hypertext documents for use on the World Wide Web. HTML looks a lot like old-fashioned typesetting code, where you surround a block of text with codes that indicate how it should appear.
or, in low-tech real-people speak "Web-pages"
The thing is, if anyone gets a "Problem" and needs an html file that is safe to upload, I will be able to provide them with a legal, clean, webpage that should help out. It won't be anything too fancy, but should satisfy Lycos.
