PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING TELEPHONE SCAM CURRENTLY TARGETING UK On answering your phone you will hear a recorded message as follows "Congratulations, we are calling to advise you that you have won an all espenses paid trip to an exotic location. Please press 9 now to hear further details"
WARNING: If you do press 9 you will be connected to a premium rate line that bills in the region of £20 per minute. If you press 9 and connect, even if you disconnect immediately, the other end will stay connected for minimum of 5 minutes. This will cost you £100 and lasts for 11 minutes. The final part of the call asks you to key in your postcode and house number which can lead to other serious consequences. Then finally after a further 2 minutes, the call responds with a message saying "Sorry, you are not one of the lucky winners." Thereafter disconnecting you adding another £260 to your bill.
The calls are originating from outside the UK and British Telecom and other telephone companies are relatively powerless to act.
Remember, if something seems too good to be true - it probably is.

Good grief Snap - thanks for the warning. I do not personally respond to any cold calling thingies but there are plenty who are more polite than I. It's a wonderful feeling - living in a free democratic society!

Due to the nature of my business i am Ex Directory and never get cold calls . I also set my phone up with BT so that anyone who tries to contact me with a number withheld cant connect. I recommend the latter if you dont wish to change your number , worked for me b4 i went EX 'D' and for my parents.
All these scumbags withhold their numbers , so disabling that wil help.
Thanx for the warning tho snap , good shout m8

I know it is not a way to block the problem above, but, you can apply for the following to stop "cold calling" by British Companies.
Telephone Preference Services
If you are receiving unwanted phone calls from companies, you can put a stop to many of them through the Telephone Preference Service.
For phones connected to BT or other land lines ring 0845 07 007 07. The website for the telephone preference service is: www.tpsonline.org.uk
There is also information about preventing Email, Fax and Snail Mail, however, this is only British legislation and does not affect companies from outside the UK.
The other minor draw back is that the Email Preference Service is only voluntarily agreed to by members of the Direct Marketing Association.
